The SMX Codex is a living document that is updated from time-to-time.

The Salaam Matrix is an integral, Muslim model of Guardianship & Governance. It contains of FOUR LIFE ZONES (Spiritual, Personal-Familial, Socioeconomic, Ecological-Political) that work as frames for human life in the outer realm; with correspondents in the inner realm.

The core Codex documents how the Zones work, what are the structures and movements within and without, what is the usage and the limitation of the Zones and the full model, and what variables and potentials are involved in the usage of the Matrix.

The extended Codex dives deeper into various modules and applications, safety measures and circuit breakers, fair and correct usage, deployments, intention-setting and so on. The Codex is potentially not finite and other aspects are added over time, since the basic Salaam Matrix is a generative and connective system that grows and operates organically and has morphic variations.

Since human life is complex, and we are only doing certain things at a time, it is understood that users and readers will only be using parts of the Salaam Matrix one at a time.

The ESSENTIAL CODEX introduces readers and users to the basic design and function of the Matrix. The ADVANCED CODEX starts looking at complexity of relationships, the movements, and the variations of a lived life in action; and also teaches how to uses elements of The Salaam Matrix in isolation for specific users and uses. All users are advised to know the ESSENTIAL CODEX, but the ADVANCED CODEX can be read slowly, and some parts of it only become relevant for special classes and needs of users.

ADVANCED VARIABLES & METHODS

As the study of The Salaam Matrix becomes deeper, complex and closer to life, the art of practice of the model, new variables, dynamics and other invisible components are coming to light and becoming part of the codex. Some of these revisions are focused on what is in the Matrix, and others about how to study and use The Salaam Matrix. Some of the upcoming candidates for enrolment in the basic codex or the auxiliary manual on how to practice and use the model include:

DERIVATIVE MATRICES

The Derivative Matrices are specialized applications or isolates of the original Salaam Matrix. They have a specialist focus in order to examine a thematic in depth and accelerate analysis and decision-making through blocking out the generic content.

Shadow Matrix
This is specialist twin of The Salaam Matrix, it isolates the “dark” factors within the Matrix and creates an alternative map of all that is broken, damaged, harmful, distressing and value-destructive or unsustainable. This is a specialized application of what the regular Matrix could also handle, but an isolate ensures a sharper focus and clarity, reducing avoidance and perceptive or political deflections. This is useful for when harm and decay in a system have outpaced the creativity and benefits, or when a “cleanup” is needed, or there is an anomalous case of decline and distress in parts of the population.

Ghost Matrix
This is yet another derivate twin of the Salaam Matrix (July 2026). The Ghost Matrix defined as a “poetic eulogy”, a matrix that examines the omissions in a system: What could have been but was not. The absent parent, the buses that don’t run, the trees that are not planted, the policies that are not developed, the towns that have no management. The need that is not met, the deprivation that hurt and the cost that was borne due to an absence. This is the Ghost Matrix.

RELATIONSHIPS

No person or role is an island, and everything in the Matrix is interconnected. This study element focuses on mostly qualitative and narrative and sometimes quantitative analysis of relationships in the matrix, the binaries, the transactions, and also the topology of the relationships. Topological analysis yields powerful insights about the spread and impact of relationships.

Relationships & Ecology
Thus far the Salaam Matrix undertook atomic thinking and representation where a person was being studied in terms of their ROLES in various LIFE ZONES. But the people and the roles they play are interconnected, not separate elements. The ROLES and the people both are weaved in a complex web of relations.

Your role as doctor or business owner connects you with other roles in the value chain and the ecology of your work. Your role as a parent has a binary, which are the children. You as a person are connected to many other persons each performing their roles. Eventually the Relationship structure lends itself to an ecology of relationships.

Polarities
Polarities (or the dual nature of existence) are one of the key elements of study in a system and therefore The Salaam Matrix. This is the study of the dual and ever-shifting nature of phenomenon, and what lies in between the two extremes of a matter or quality in existence. This is such a highly important feature of reality and existence that many scriptures Eastern or Western are committed in great part to the study of Polarities and their movement and impact. As part of the Salaam Matrix codex, we are in the process of publishing a detailed introduction to Polarities, in Summer 2026, and thereafter carrying out detailed, ongoing studied on the thematic. Insha’Allah.

WORK & STRESS MEASUREMENTS

Humans do not play all roles with equal ease or effort. What is the measure of how much they are doing? What ability and capacity do they have? How is work distributed amongst various members in a group or cluster? Why? The Work & Stress studies pertain to this matter.

Labor, Load & Capacity
These are new, subset units of study where we determine the extent of labor, its nature and description, and the capacity (for care) within each role. The parent unit for Labor and the Capacity of Care and Effort is ROLES. In other words, these new units study how much is a person or group being exerted in a role, what tasks do they perform for instance as a mother or housekeep or personal assistant or publicist, and what is the load-bearing capacity of the role and the person. The benefit of these unites of study is to avoid brushing matters of labor, effort, pay, compensation, and exertion under the carpet or umbrella roles and moral obligations. Secondary uses include resource planning, time & effort studies, ability and equipment studies and identification of breaking or excess capacity — as well as better distribution of effort and assignment, for example between two parents.

Weighted Diagnosis
An insight led us to assign WEIGHTS to the various elements in the Salaam Matrix, to make the analysis nuanced. The basic study of ROLES for example states and defines the roles. The WEIGHTED analysis assigns a percentage or ratio to the ROLE, comparing it with other roles in the same pr another person’s life. How much is a writer mother, for instance, playing the role of a mother and a writer in terms of, say, hours spent a day? 30% writer, 70% mother? The weighted diagnosis brings contrast and shape to the analysis and shows a truer picture of roles, performance and relations.

Negotiating Power
Negotiating power and the ability to obtain buy-in from others around you is a skill and a leverage. One can have the best ideas and plans but if they cannot negotiate agreement, their will shall not be done. Understanding how much influence and ability one has, how much and with whom one can negotiate and what is the leverage or any cards they hold and what is the source of power… are all critical factors that deepen the analysis.

ANALYTICS & ANALYSES

The Salaam Matrix can be used to perform various kinds of analyses both within and on the Matrix, and to adapt it to user cases and needs. While new analyses are suggested as part of a basic codex, there are potentially many more ways of look at, within and through the Salaam Matrix.

New Forms of Analyses
At the time of its inception, the Salaam Matrix was a somewhat flat model of human activities, and the reader’s task was to read the roles that humans play and think of what products and services would people need to play those roles. Over time, the Salaam Matrix ceased to be a market/product gap analysis tool and become a complex model for civilization-level adaptation and application. As reflections deepen and the work on the Matrix progresses, it becomes clearer that multiple types of analyses can be conducted within, with or at the model. Some of the identified analyses are:

Directional Analysis: What are the vectors of shift, and in which direction do they move, where do they originate and where does the impact land?
Impact Analysis: What is the nature, quantum, quality of impact of a role or transaction or shift? Who gets affected? This is both a narrative and a qualitative study.
Gap Analysis: What is missing? What are the needs? What can be produced or procured to serve the needs of people?

Note: The GHOST MATRIX, a new isolate (specialist applied matrix) is a new derivative that deals in detail with gaps and lacks. The Ghost Matrix is activated when we are studying primarily only needs, gaps and omissions in the system.

EFFICIENCY

It is not enough to work and to play our life roles as humans, we also need to do the work efficiently in terms of cost, time and effort. This unit studied variables and methods pertaining to efficiency.

Circumspection & Elegance/Efficiency
This is a study of how effectively, efficiently and with centeredness and integrity does a task gets accomplished, a role gets played or a layout designed. The beauty and elegance of the task is also a factor, since we aren’t seeking to nominally check “DONE” for the basic structure, definition and needs. These are normally qualitative factors but upon deeper inspection, can be assigned quantitative weight and structure. Our suggestion though is that the question of efficiency is connected with the question of elegance and even intent and morality or virtue, which are separate values but there is a point of convergence for them in a task well done.

Waste, Damage, Costs (Externalities)
Often, architectural and creative systems look at creation and design, but refuse or fail to look wholly or fully at Waste, Damages and Costs, and “Externalities” which are costs arising out of a unit or structure but assigned vaguely to or dumped on the Collective. Our process suggests that completion is a matter of knowing and working on Waste, Damage, Costs and any by-products and harm. The preference is to reduce them without harming or corrupting the core product, and then to circle them back into the system. This also lends itself to study the matter of materials and how they work and what they entail. Materials are currently not part of the Codex as the model tends to study the ethereal rather than the material and the physical, but materials are the substance with which human roles are played, and thus must factor into the Codex at later stages.

BLOCKS & FLOW

The study of whether the system is lubricated and openly flowing, or blocked and stuck.

Blocks & Flow
In order for work and energy to flow around and for transactions to take place, there needs to be an ongoing audit of the flow structure in the system. This means creating bridges, pipelines and flow where they are needed but do not exist, and it also means removing blocks and upgrading and maintaining the linkage points in the system.

Gatekeeping & Security
By the same token, not all linkages are legitimate or beneficial, some are leakages, backdoors and extractive and others are unfair. Some create excess load on the system and on queuing. Some bridges and links need to be removed, and gates kept and fences built. This protects what is essential, while guiding attention and traffic towards where it needs to flow for the overall health of the system. Creating FLOW in some places can, in fact, create a BLOCK in the system. For instance, opening up a roadside food stall will create flow of customers to the stall, but will block the road. Seeing these things in tandem keeps the system regulated and happy.

ACTIVATION: MODALITIES & METHODS

This part deals with the methods and suggestions pertaining to the activation and practice of The Salaam Matrix. This is not an exhaustive list, but rather a number of methods and suggestions that may or may not be deployed.

Analogies
Analogies such as architectural reference are a method of crystallizing otherwise abstract concepts. We sometimes use the analogies of homes and rooms to create an idea of separate space for various participants and stakeholders, or to explain opposites and polarities. For example, “the kitchen and the washroom” is a pointed metaphor to explain two completely opposite spaces in the house. We also use the Hospital framework as a construct for various analogies. Praxis & Activation
The practice and activation of The Salaam Matrix is in itself a body of knowledge around which we are developing codes. The first matter of concern is the Approach towards the model and understand what its capabilities, limitations and scope are. The Salaam Matrix first and foremost is a tool of clarity, perception and order. All decisions and practice lead from this. The user-reader has to have a clarified intent and know exactly what they want to use the tool for, so that the applications and scope are determined, and the tool can “shift shape” to serve that nee — since there are many hidden layers and shapes in the tool and it needs to be shifted into a suitable form for each use case. The users have to work with a set of questions developed for their particular use or develop their own questions. They need to balance various concerns and costs.

One way that this tool can be used for large-scale deployment is to train entire expert teams on it, who can be called upon when need arises. And another method of deployment is to feed the tool to AI, and use a licensed trainer to develop questions, measures and applications with the AI. This can also become a live systems management tool that captures and processes data at various points and turns them into insight, facilitation and action.

Praxis of & Activation through the model is a rich field, and we are working to develop the methodologies at this time.

Stakeholders and Councils
Working through participation and a council framework is a key method to build community and consensus, and for this, Salaam Matrix is an ideal tool, and these methods are ideal for implementing the Matrix. (Benefit flows both ways.) A council with multiple stakeholders and a seat at the table for the general opinion and voice (vox pop) is an ideal construct through which to deploy the Salaam Matrix in communal constructs such as in government projects. (The vox pop is determined through analysis of citizen input.)

The designer of the Salaam Matrix, Ramala Hubb’Allah, has developed community-building methodologies such as The Oneness Breakfast (a conversation circle) and written about the citizen as a stakeholder and guardian whose concerns are of multiple kinds, and who therefore wants a system that serves all those needs and who watches over those concerns (in the four Life Zones) as a accountability partner of the government.
