The basic schema of The Salaam Matrix, a governance and guardianship tool, contains Four Life Zones that span the scope of human activity.
1. Spiritual
2. Personal-Familial
3. Socioeconomic
4. Ecological-Political
The Eight Aspects of the Four Life Zones, divide each zone into an essential duality contained within each zone. This is how the Zones are made finer, in this order (the order is important):
Spiritual = Heart/Mind
Personal-Familial = Self/Family
Socioeconomic = Society/Economy
Ecological-Political = Ecology/Politics
The left side of each pair is an aspect that is closer to a human, and within their realm of influence. It pertains to their values, autonomy, and has an aspect of intimacy.
The Left Side aspects are: Heart, Self, Society, Ecology
The right side of each pair is more outward-looking, where a person is more transactional, fashioned by and accountable to outer elements and forces, and less arbitrary.
The Right Side aspects are: Mind, Family, Economy, Politics
The first is more contemplation and determination; and the latter is more transactional and demands performance and entering into contracts more formally and visibly.
This duality within each zone creates some essential demarcations and safeguards, generates a sense of caution and accountability, and separates a “softer” realm from a more “practical” one. This duality also creates variation and flow within the Zones, as the two parts negotiate with one another.
While each Zone is a single unit qualitatively or in terms of its focus, there is a negotiation between the two aspects taking place within that Zone. Without this finer demarcation, that negotiation which can either be a source of conflict or lead to harmony, gets washed over and is left unaddressed by the model. By defining these aspects and the internal tension of each Zone, the Salaam Matrix assists the user in acknowledging these and then build better negotiations as well as requisite boundaries. For instance:
SPIRITUAL ZONE:
Is this belief that I hold internal and based on my experiences and intuition, or it this taught to me and my mind?
PERSONAL-FAMILIAL ZONE:
What are my rights and duties within my family? What are other members’ rights and duties towards me? Are we always meant to do everything together and in a like fashion?
SOCIOECONOMIC ZONE:
Is my friend also able to become a good business partner?
As a small business owner, who are my customers and patrons? Must I employ family?
Am I “family” or friend to my coworkers?
ECOLOGICAL-POLITICAL ZONE:
Do I need to be part of a winner political party in order to contribute to the ecological welfare of my country?
What parts of the management of our national assets should not change with a change in government?
What are the common welfare concerns of all citizens, regardless of political alliances?

The first set (left in each pair) is also one that is predominantly a matter of Guardianship, care, nurturing, reflection. The second set (right in each pair) is about control, oversight, outwardness within each Life Zone, and falls in the realm of Governance. Please know that by themselves, Guardianship and Governance are not hard divided, and there is interchangeability and connectedness between the two, and likewise between the left and the right side of each pair.
In the Salaam Matrix, these “divisions” are created for greater clarity and placement, and to make each aspect better for its own sake and for the sake of its correspondent in the pair; it is not for division, separation, isolation and competition. It is done in order for clearer identification, and to determine where exactly work and decision-making needs to be done when it needs to be done, without disrupting the rest.
